- Asus ROG Phone 5 will be powered by a Snapdragon 888 chipset.
- The ROG Phone 5 will be a big gaming upgrade over ROG Phone 3.
- Asus has been teasing the launch of the ROG Phone 5 for a while now.
Asus ROG Phone 5 seems around the corner as the phone has been spotted on China's TENAA and 3C certification websites. A leaked hands-on video also gave the first glimpse at the phone but the full set of specifications never managed to come out. Now ahead of the launch, Asus tested how well the ROG Phone 5 can perform on the Geekbench 5 platform where it revealed the key specifications of the phone along with performance benchmarks. Unsurprisingly, we are looking at another gaming brute from Asus.
The Geekbench platform lists the Asus ROG Phone 5 with the model number ASUS_I005DA. This will be the successor to the ROG Phone 3 (Review) that outshone other gaming phones to become the top favourite choice in the under Rs 50,000 segment. This year, Asus is sprucing up its gaming offering with ROG Phone 5 that will be powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. The codename "Lahaina" gives away this information. The listing further says the ROG Phone 5 will come with 16GB of RAM, although an 8GB RAM version was also spotted earlier.
The details so far seem solid for a gaming phone that will go against the bigwigs in the market. And while the actual phone experience is something that will be written about once the phone is launched, Asus is showing the benchmarks that should be a good indication. In the single-core test, the Asus ROG Phone 5 scored 1125 while the multi-core scores stand at 3714. The smartphone will also bring Android 11 software, obviously with custom ROG UI that will help make the gaming experience better.
Previously, the TENAA listing for the same Asus model suggested the ROG Phone 5 will measure 172.834x77.252x10.29mm. The thickness of over 10mm goes in line with how gaming phones are supposed to be. There will be a 6.78-inch display on the phone, as well. This may be an OLED panel with a refresh rate maxing out at 144Hz for the high-end gaming experience. The ROG Phone 5 has a 6000mAh battery, the 3C certification suggested. This battery could support 65W fast charging technology, probably with the help of two USB-C ports.
The Asus ROG Phone 5 will probably come with a 64MP triple camera system on the back. Much like the predecessor, this smartphone may come with a Sony sensor as the main one. One of the hands-on images of the ROG Phone 5 also suggested this phone will have a secondary matrix display on the back to show alerting notifications or important snippets about the game being played on the smartphone. For now, the actual purpose of this display is not clear.
Asus has not said anything about when the ROG Phone 5 will be launched. It did tease the smartphone erstwhile though. But the rumour mill suggests the ROG Phone 5 launch could take place sometime after the Chinese new year which falls on February 12. The India launch of the smartphone may follow the China launch.
