Highlights

  • BSNL Wings app enables users to make calls through an internet connection.
  • The functionality is called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and can work without a SIM.
  • Users should make sure they have a good internet connection and a one-time subscription to make these calls.

Government-owned telecommunications company Bhartiya Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Wings app will let users make calls through an internet connection. This means that BSNL Wings users will be able to make calls even if they do not have a SIM card given they have a good internet connection.

This functionality is called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). It is not Vo-WiFi but works a lot like that, Telecom Talk reported.

Vo-WiFi is short for Voice over WiFi. The feature is aimed at helping telcos decongest their networks and help users experience crisp calls even when the signal strength is low. This is because Vo-WiFi automatically allows the phone to switch between cellular connectivity and WiFi during calls.

Similar to the Vo-WiFi, the Wings app helps users make calls over the internet. The app can be downloaded on a smartphone. Users must put in the right credentials to log in to the services after downloading the app.

BSNL Wings app subscription comes at Rs 1099

Once the app is downloaded, the BSNL Wings app lists out the contacts from a user's phone. The subscription costs Rs 1099.

To activate the Wings service, users will get a 10-digit subscription ID after the Session Initiation Protocol. After getting the 10-digit ID, the users will get a 16 digit number on their registered email to activate the service.

Video calls can be made with BSNL Wings users

The app also enables video calling given that users at both ends have the BSNL Wings app and have paid for a one-time subscription for a year.

The app also enables users to make international calls. Subscribers will have to pay a Rs 2000 deposit before they make international calls. Charges for the call from Wings app will be the same as for the existing landline tariffs for international calls.

Users should make sure they have a good internet connection to make these calls. They can also male VoIP calls using public WiFi.

VoIP or Vo-WiFi can be used in areas where there is hardly any network. So, if the user's phone is connected to a good Wi-Fi or internet connection, they can make calls even without a SIM card. This is similar to how calls are made using WhatsApp but there is a slight difference, which is that if the WiFi or internet network fails the call will be automatically routed to the cellular network. In case of a WhatsApp call if the WiFi or internet network fails then the call will fail. There is no fallback option.
