Nothing, the consumer tech company founded by Carl Pei, will launch its first product, the Ear 1, a truly wireless earphone next month. Pei talks about how the company's first product, Ear 1, shaped up and how the new truly wireless earphone is just the start in its latest blog. This is also the first time that Pei revealed the name of Nothing's first product.
Based on previous announcements, we expect Ear 1 to be inspired or at least include some elements of Concept 1, a prototype design that the company showcased in March earlier this year.
Nothing showed off a tobacco-pipe inspired design of Concept 1 which we are certain to inspire Ear 1.
Despite the pandemic disturbing product launches for many companies, it is nice to see that Nothing is managing to pull off the launch as it initially teased. In March, Pei promised, "We look forward to showing you how this comes to life through our first products this summer." However, we will have to wait to see if the product starts shipping soon after its global unveiling or not.
In his latest blog, Pei also stresses the fact that Ear 1 is no "disappearing act overnight", and no one should expect it to be. The company hasn't really revealed the design of the Ear 1 so far but drops enough hints to make sure buzz doesn't die off.
"Design is still top secret, but what we can tell you is that Ear 1 combines notes of transparency, iconic form, and refined functionality. It is the starting point that will define the artistry, confidence and craftsmanship that will carry our products and services for years to come," says Pei.
While talking about Ear 1, Pei touched upon why Nothing is launching an earbud first. He revealed that the earphones segment isn't seeing much of a design differentiation, and we cannot agree more. Pei talks about elevating the design and delivering value from the start. He further adds that Ear 1 earphones are just the start, and it helps the company prepare to enter new product categories.
"We believe the earphones market was begging for differentiation, a space where we can elevate design and deliver value from day one. Additionally, as an area of hyper-growth, the earphones market will provide a fertile backdrop as we strengthen our capabilities and prepare to enter new product categories," Pei said.
We are not at all surprised why Nothing hasn't teased or let the leaks reveal any part of the design so far. Pei strongly believes that design is the soul of the product, and it could be one strong reason why he wants to keep it a surprise till the launch. Some of the design principles revealed by Nothing include weightless, where the company focuses on keeping only what is necessary, effortless, keeping the product interaction simple, and timeless, through which the company will try to offer a design that feels fresh for several years.
