In a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus, San Francisco officials have ordered the residents to stay at home. This means that San Francisco will go into lockdown for three weeks starting from Tuesday till April 7. The order will affect over 7 million people in six countries in the Bay Area.
The residents are only allowed to step out for meeting the basic needs such as buying groceries or medicines, or visiting a doctor till at least April 7. Any movement other than that is legally prohibited. This will also mean that the leisure places like gym, bars and other places will be temporarily closed. Whereas the important places like the banks, grocery shops, medical shops will be allowed to remain open.
The order has been imposed on residents of six Bay Area counties such as San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Contra Costa and Alameda.
We know these measures will significantly disrupt people's day-to-day lives, but they are absolutely necessary, This is going to be a defining moment for our city and we all have a responsibility to do our part to protect our neighbors and slow the spread of this virus by staying at home unless it is absolutely essential to go outside, San Francisco Mayor London Breed said on Monday.
In the same press conference, Breed urged people to remain calm and also reassured that their essential needs will be met.
Despite the shelter in place order by the San Francisco officials, the residents will be allowed to take a walk or take their pet out for a walk or even exercise as long s they maintain a good six feet distance from people who are not a member of their household.
The head of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, Grant requested all residents of the city to comply with the order. He reiterated that any person who leaves San Francisco for non-essential purposes between Tuesday and April 7 will be considered out of compliance. However, people are allowed to return to the city, if they have been out before the order was issued.
There has been a total of 40 confirmed cases of coronavirus in San Francisco whereas in the neighboring counties like Santa Clara and San Mateo the confirmed cases have gone up to 114 and 41 respectively.
