After social media apps, Facebook now wants to foray into the smartwatch market. The social media giant is now working on a smartwatch that it plans to sell next year. As per a report by The Information, the smartwatch that Facebook is building will be an Android-based smartwatch. However, it is not clear whether the smartphone will use its own operating system or rely on Google's Wear OS to run the show.
The report says that the Facebook smartwatch will come loaded with health and fitness features. While that is not something unusual, the unique feature that the smartwatch could come with is the ability to send messages from the watch directly. For now, this feature is not seen in any of the smartwatches. If reports are to be trusted, Facebook could start selling the smartwatch next year.
The companies have not implemented this feature despite launching smartwatches with huge screens. In terms of hardware, Facebook had previously developed Oculus virtual reality headsets and Portal video chat devices.
Apart from the watch, Facebook is said to be working on Ray-Ban smart glasses and an augmented reality research initiative known as Project Aria. Tight company has over 6000 employees working on its augmented reality project. Facebook has neither confirmed nor declined the news.
This was all about Facebook's hardware projects. Now coming to the software, Facebook is reportedly working on an app similar to Clubhouse. Interestingly, the news of Facebook building an app surfaced six days after CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg joined Clubhouse.
A New York Times report has revealed that Facebook has asked its product team to create an app similar to Clubhouse. The app is in its early stages of development. "We've been connecting people through audio and video technologies for many years and are always exploring new ways to improve that experience for people," Emilie Haskell, a Facebook spokesperson told The NYT.
Facebook has always taken a keen interest in its rivals. It has either acquired its competitors or created something bigger to overshadow its products. Facebook has taken over WhatsApp, Instagram, and even Oculus after these apps became increasingly popular among the younger audience. Currently, Clubhouse has hogged limelight among the users across the world.
Clubhouse is unique in every way. Just like any other app, you cannot download Clubhouse from the App Store. It is an invite-only app which means you can only join the app when you are invited by an existing user of the app.
