Google announced major updates to two of its video conferring platforms Google Duo and Google Meet. While the Duo will now be able to host 32 people at once, Meet makes a smooth transition to the Gmail app on mobile. Ever since the lockdowns were imposed due to coronavirus, the demand for video-conferencing apps increased rapidly. Many apps like Zoom rose to overnight fame.
Keeping the proliferation of video-conferencing app in mind, Google too rebranded Hangouts as Meet and presented its own video-conferencing platform. Initially, the app was chargeable but now the Meet app has been made available to all the users free of cost. Whereas Google Duo comes pre-loaded in all the Android phones. It was being looked up as a more causal video-calling app but now it also lets users add up to 32 people on the web while the mobile version supports up to 12 people in a single call. There is no doubt that both the video-calling platforms can be used for professional as well as personal purposes but there is a clear distinction between the two apps.

Coming to the interface, both Meet and Duo have a pretty clean UI and extremely easy to use. For instance, you can launch Dup simply by tapping on the camera icon and adding people you want to chat with. There are filters and effects that can make you chat a fun one. Similarly, Google Meet is even simpler to access, the app opens in a camera mode and there are two options that are given to the users— New Meeting or Meeting Code. A meeting can be joined on Google app using a Meeting code and you can also be a host and invite people to join your call following the same process. You can also schedule meetings on Google Meet and let people know about it in advance.
In Google Meet, you can add over 50 people to a call. It also has features like background noise cancellation, Tiled layouts, a present a chrome tab option, low-light mode and all. The Meet was launched to take on Zoom and it has already gained popularity amongst work from people who are working from home.
So if you need an app for professional purposes, go for Meet but if you need a more casual app to catch up with your friends, Google Duo is the one for you.
