In the year 2020, people languished in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. That is when smartphones and TVs became the primary source of entertainment. According to a latest report, smartphone usage grew by a quarter in July-September when compared to the same period last year.
The July-September in 2020 is also the time when the number of app downloads increased massively. On the other hand, Google Play Store's competitor, Apple's App Store could only manage 8.2 billion total downloads.

Now speaking of the kinds of apps that were downloaded varies across gaming apps, educational apps and business-related applications. Going by the same report, it suggests that the most downloaded category of apps on the Google Play Store belongs to the gaming sector with 13.49 per cent, followed by education sector with 9.11 per cent, and business with 6.95 per cent of all downloads.
Overall, Google Play Store boasts a whopping app portfolio with over 2.7 million total applications ahead of Apple's App Store that offers 1.82 million apps.
