  • The feature list also includes the roll-out of new apps such as Huawei Share
  • There is also a new video calling app, MeeTime, that has been launched by Huawei

Huawei recently launched its much-awaited P40 series of phones. The series brings three devices in the form of P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+. Alongside the release of the phones, Huawei also announced the roll-out of EMUI 10.1 -- the company's latest update of the software.

The new version of Huawei's Android 10-based UI adds new functionality, but more interestingly, it brings Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) based upgrades that attempt to smoothen Huawei's transition away from Google Mobile Services.

EMUI 10.1 is scheduled to roll out to over 30 Huawei smartphone models, including the Huawei Mate 30 Series, Huawei Mate X, Huawei P30 Series and more. While we're yet to test EMUI 10.1, on paper the new version appears to be quite well balanced in terms of features and functionality. Here's everything interesting that's coming to Huawei smartphones with EMUI 10.1.

UI Improvements

As the company detailed in its launch presentation, improving the UI experience is a very big part of EMUI 10.1 as such there are some interesting new additions that have been introduced with the new software.

For example, while scrolling the UI now reacts to user inputs with a new physics-inspired friction-slide effect. Similar to how objects in motion gradually decelerate as they lose their momentum to friction, the scrolling animations now also slow down before coming to a natural stop.

Swiping inwards from either side and pausing bring out the sidebar. Apps inside the sidebar can be dragged across the screen to initiate Multi-Window. Images, text and even files can be dragged from one app to another. Floating Window allows users to perform basic tasks such as responding to text messages without exiting the active full-screen app, so users can stay focused on their tasks at hand.

Multi-Device Control Panel

Multi-Device Control Panel is another new addition that provides a unified platform that lets users see every connected device in their proximity at a glance. The feature is available by swiping up from either corner and can be used to turn IoT devices on or off, set up smartphone screen projection, initiate Multi-screen Collaboration and more.

Huawei MeeTime

EMUI 10.1 also brings with itself a new video calling app -- Huawei MeeTime. The app supports up to 1080p Full HD video calls between Huawei devices. It also comes with brightness enhancements and beautification algorithms built-in. The company claims it also features optimisations to deliver smooth video call experience even in less optimal network conditions.

Celia

Huawei is also bringing a new voice assistant, Celia, with the EMUI 10.1. Celia is claimed to have a range of abilities to "help users get things done", including access to the device's hardware and AI, enabling the voice assistant to support object identification, media playback control, text messaging, face-to-face translation, calorie scanning and more.

Celia currently speaks English, French and Spanish, and will be rolling out to the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Mexico, Chile and Columbia in the first phase, with more countries to come in the future.

Huawei Share

Huawei Share is another new feature that's being introduced with EMUI 10.1. It supports high speed file transfer between two Huawei devices. In addition to Huawei smartphones, tablets and PC, Huawei Share also supports some third-party products.
