- The Mi MIX Alpha won’t release with a Snapdragon 865 chip this year.
- The Alpha was released as a one-off concert device with a wraparound display.
- Xiaomi debuted its 108-megapixel camera on the MIX Alpha.
Do you remember the Mi MIX Alpha? Yes, that crazy looking smartphone Xiaomi demonstrated to the Indian media early this year as a smartphone of many firsts: the first phone with a 108-megapixel camera, the first phone with a wraparound display and first phone with 5G in India. In the last couple of weeks, there were rumours of Xiaomi doing a commercial version of the same with a Snapdragon 865. Well, that's not happening anytime soon.
In an official post on Weibo, one of Xiaomi's representatives has confirmed that there's no Mi MIX Alpha with Qualcomm's flagship chipset for 2020 smartphones. The Alpha was a one-off concept smartphone that showcased Xiaomi's ability to bend screens all the way to the back of the phone. Xiaomi did express intentions of putting in production but the phone never went on sale, at least in India.
The Alpha flaunted specifications that were the best in late 2019. Xiaomi stuffed a Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset and paired it with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. The phone also had a triple camera system, with the main camera using a 108-megapixel sensor, which is the same one it introduced later in the Xiaomi Mi 10.
The alpha's party piece was its AMOLED display which wrapped around the sides and extended to the back of the phone, with only a piece of ceramic separating the two ends and holding the cameras. The display was a plastic OLED panel, the one you see on phones like the Motorola Razr and Samsung Galaxy Fold.
Xiaomi, at the time, said that it was capable fo mass-producing the MIX Alpha but the costs could be extremely high. Rumours suggested a price north of Rs 2 lakhs, which could have made it the most expensive smartphone in the country.
The MIX Alpha remained a concept and was limited to a few demo devices. Xiaomi eventually came out with the Mi 10 flagship, a conventional premium smartphone with a curved edge display and the same 108-megapixel camera. The phone launched in India last month at a starting price of Rs 49,999.
Xiaomi is currently focusing on the premium segment of smartphones with its Mi sub-brand this year and based on the previous hints, we could be expecting more premium Xiaomi smartphones this year.
