Xiaomi's first foldable smartphone is here. The Mi Mix Fold was launched in China on Tuesday during a two-day keynote by the electronics maker. The new Mi Mix smartphone features a 108-megapixel main camera, an inward-folding design, dual-screen form factor as the Samsung Galaxy Fold series, 67W fast charging but what makes this smartphone stand out, is the liquid lens on one of its rear cameras.

Mi Mix Fold is world's first smartphone with Liquid Lens technology which uses the principle of human eye bionics, "forming a lens-like structure with a transparent fluid wrapped in film, very different from traditional optical lenses."

In simple words, the camera uses a motor to precisely manipulate a packet of fluid, which allows the camera to switch between Telephoto Mode (3x optical zoom or 30x hybrid zoom) and maintain a minimum focus distance of 3cm. Xiaomi claims that this helps one lens to cover the functions of two lenses. The Liquid Lens helps users shoot from close distances as well as take wide shots.

The Liquid Lens also offers high light transmittance, ultra-low dispersion and excellent resistance to extreme environments. Xiaomi has said that the fluid works fine in temperatures ranging from -40C to 60C (or -40F to 140F).

As for the camera system, the smartphone is equipped with a 108-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera and an 8-megapixel bionic camera. It's the last that features the Liquid Lens to offer four photography modes.

This isn't the only change from Xiaomi to boost the camera system on its smartphones. It has also developed its own image signal processor, the Surge C1, which the company claimed delivers faster autofocus, auto white balance and auto exposure. Xiaomi claims that the new chip enables an improved 3A algorithm and low-light focus capabilities for more accurate auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance, significantly improving image quality.

Mi Mix Fold features

Mi Mix Fold features an 8.01-inch 2,480 x 1,860 (4:3) foldable panel, which supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and a maximum brightness of 600 nits. The smartphone folds inwards to offer a 6.52-inch AMOLED panel on the cover with a narrow 2,520 x 840 resolution, along with Dolby Vision support and a higher 700-nit brightness.

The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor, with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. There's also a generous 5,020mAh battery with 67W turbo charging support.
