  • Netflix cancelled its one-month free trials earlier this month.
  • Now, Netflix has announced a StreamFest that will let users stream shows for free at no cost.
  • The StreamFest will be available only for Indian users first and may later expand to other countries.

When Netflix cancelled its one-month free trials earlier this month, there was a hint from the company that it would bring in more promotional offers to draw customers. And true to its word, Netflix has confirmed a free 48-hour trial on December 4. The promotional offer called "StreamFest," will only be available to Indian users on the said date as the company is in the testing phase. Netflix may expand the offer to other countries after seeing the response in India.

"An idea we're excited about and we'll see how it goes, we think that giving everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have," Netflix COO Greg Peters confirmed in an interview after the company's Q3 2020 results. "Really creating an event, and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up." The development was first reported by Protocol.

Previously, when Netflix gave free trials, users had to put in their payment details so after a month of free streaming, the company could deduct the monthly charge by default. However, users always had the option to cancel the subscription if they wished to. The StreamFest, however, will not require any payment details from users and they can stream for free.

On increasing the price of Netflix subscriptions Peters said, "We do an assessment: Do we believe that we're really delivering more value to members?" he said, adding that "a North Star we hold close to our heart in this whole process is we think that we are just incredible entertainment value and we very much want to remain an incredible value as we continue to improve the service and grow."

Indian users can get access to Netflix subscription by subscribing to some postpaid plans. Last month Netflix gave access to a few shows and movies to users at absolutely no cost. Netflix gained 2.2 million subscribers worldwide in the Q3 of 2020.
