The revamped BlackBerry 10 OS, launched with the BlackBerry Z10 in January 2013, now gets its first major update. BlackBerry has announced the launch of the BB 10.2.1 OS update that will add a number of new features to the existing operating system.
Lock Screen Notification undergoes a change following the upgrade.
Even the device locked, the user can now view the sender and the subject of the latest email, SMS or BBM received by simply tapping on the messaging icon. The BlackBerry Hub can be now customized for BBMs, emails, text messages and social notifications on a per-contact basis.
The notification window that appeared at the top of the screen for an incoming message or BBM has been extended to emails as well. A user will be able to respond to BBMs or texts as well by tapping the notification box when it appears.
In the BlackBerry calendar, making and editing appointments has been made easier. When late for a meeting, for instance, the user can select the 'I will be late' option and set the period for which he will be delayed with a tap of the finger. Copy and Paste have been made easier as double tapping on any text field brings up the text selection menu and editing options.
In Documents To Go, that is used for opening and editing word, excel and power-point files, one can now use features such as find and replace, new formulas for excel and rehearsal mode in power points. One can also save the current page and read it later while offline.
The OS update also brings a 'reply now' feature where during an incoming call, clicking the speech icon will open up the Reply Now messages. Fromm here, one can choose from three pre-made messages or create one's own customised message.
Catching up with what's already available on other platforms, BlackBerry too has brought in battery percentage indicators and monitoring options that help user optimize battery usage. This will appear when the Peek gesture is used or the screen is locked.
In an official statement, the company said the OS 10.2.1 will be available around the world, including the US, Europe, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America starting from Tuesday (January 28). Users will receive a notification on their phones or can check the software update in their settings. The update will be available on the existing devices running BB OS 10 including BB Z10, Z30, Q10, Q5 and the Porsche Design P'9982.
