University students in India will now be able to subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 for as little as Rs 87 per month.
The new Office 365 University will be available to all full-time and part-time students of accredited universities and colleges in India. However, they will have pay Rs 4,199 upfront for a four-year subscription.
"Four years is the usual length of a college course that is why the subscription will be for a minimum of that period," says Tarun Malik, Director of Product Management and Strategy at Microsoft India. He adds that those buying the product will be able to use it for four years even if their courses are for a shorter duration.
Students will have to provide their university credentials at office.com/verify or send the documents manually. The purchase will be possible only after the verification.
The product and all its applications will work across two PCs or Macs for use by a single person and will give access to the web-based Office on Demand and 20GB premium SkyDrive storage.
Malik says Microsoft has a data base of all accredited institutions and those who don't find their colleges listed can give the additional details needed for verification.
There is already a web-based Live@edu option with limited functionality available for students, as well as a Office 365 for Education aimed at schools with free and paid configurations.
The Office 365 University, however, is a full-blown version. It includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access.
