Should one wait? This is the technology buyer's paradox. Should we wait for a few months for the next generation of the latest and greatest products to hit the stores? Or should we just double down, knowing that we are buying a fast-depreciating asset, and still buy it?
The answer is not always as simple as you think, but if you have a fair idea of when the next generation of products is going to be launched, you can take a more informed decision.
Here is a quick advice column on what to buy and what to wait for.
ANDROID PHONES - WAIT
Because the next major launches of Android devices will run on the next version of Android, called Ice Cream Sandwich. Some manufacturers are promising updates to their devices, but these updates could take a long time.
BLACKBERRY DEVICES - WAIT
Research in Motion, the Blackberry maker, has bolstered its offerings of late, but there are still a couple of months to go before it launches its new operating system, BBX, which we are told is going to be a radical upgrade.
WINDOWS LAPTOPS - WAIT (IF YOU CAN)
Windows 8, the next upgrade of the Windows operating system, and Intel's next-generation chips called 'Ivy Bridge' are both due by the end of the year.
APPLE COMPUTERS - WAIT
Again, the new Intel processors are quite likely to make it onto the new Apple machines; in fact, they should make it onto the new MacBooks before they hit a Windows machine. There are unlikely to be any cosmetic changes, but if you can get more computing power at the same price in a few months, why shouldn't you go for it?
iPHONE - BUY
A new iPhone will be out later this year, but these devices take a while to filter down to Indian operators. If you have to buy the outrageously expensive iPhone in India, this is as good a time as any.
DIGITAL CAMERAS - BUY
Leading camera manufacturers - Canon, Nikon and Sony - have just launched their latest cameras featuring higher zoom capabilities and more megapixels, and this is as good a time as any to buy a digital camera in India.
NEW TELEVISION - WAIT
Here's an insight. Television manufacturers usually update their product lines every summer in the United States, which is still the biggest market for such products. These television models then come to India around late summer, so you'd do well to wait. The next generation of television sets will be better than the present one, and will also drive the prices of existing top-end models further downward.
