- The Nokia 8.3 5G and Nokia 5.3 will get it the first sometime before December.

Nokia's Android 11 timeline has got concrete announcements from HMD Global. The Finnish company has announced the first device to get Android 11 will be the Nokia 8.3 5G. The rollout will begin sometime in the fourth quarter of this year, which is between October and December. There will be three more devices that will join the Nokia 8.3 5G to receive Android 11: Nokia 5.3, Nokia 8.1, and Nokia 2.2.
In a press statement, HMD Global noted that 94% of the Nokia smartphone portfolio was updated to the latest Android version within a year of new Android release, citing data from research firm Counterpoint. Nokia is known for its timely updates to its phones, including new Android versions, under the Android One programme -- something that it heavily sells over the specifications in the market.
Besides the Nokia 8.3 5G, the Nokia 5.3 will receive the Android 11 around the same time while the Nokia 2.2 and Nokia 8.1 will get it a little later. But all this will be done within this year, HMD Global has said. With the Android 11 update, the Nokia phones will get a horde of new features, including chat bubbles, new power button menu, compact and more efficient Google Assistant, a revamped quick toggles menu, and tighter privacy settings.
Some other smartphones from the company's portfolio, including Nokia 1.3, Nokia 4.2, Nokia 2.4, Nokia 2.3, Nokia 3.4, Nokia 3.2, Nokia 7.2, Nokia 6.2, Nokia 1 Plus, and Nokia 9 PureView, are also eligible. These will get Android 11 latest by the second quarter of 2021.
HMD Global is not just stopping at the Android 11 announcement, it is going ahead and giving us tentative candidates for the Android 12 update. Well, Android 12 update is nowhere to be seen, at least right now. It might come out next year, with the seeding for early versions beginning next year. HMD Global says that its latest Nokia 3.4 and Nokia 2.4 are "already primed" for Android 12 release. These two smartphones were added to HMD Global's portfolio only a few weeks back.
"Upgrading the operating system of a phone is an intricate process involving multiple partners and a variety of tests. We are hugely proud of the industry-leading process we have in place for Nokia smartphones and continue to make it a key priority of ours to ensure our customers benefit from the latest Android innovation ahead of the competition in every price point," said Juho Sarvikas, product chief for Nokia phones at HMD Global.
