Highlights

  • ICICI Bank servers are facing an outage where even the OTP is not coming.
  • Several customers have complained of constant problems with netbanking too.
  • Amazon is offering up to 5 per cent cashback on its ICICI credit card during the sale.

Amazon began its Great Indian Festival sale today with an extravaganza of deals and discounts but more than these offers, a big chunk of shoppers is lured by cashbacks on credit and debit cards. These bank offers are at the maximum during the sales ahead of festivals and people want to benefit from their credit or debit cards. But customers of ICICI Bank are having a hard time leveraging their card benefits. The ICICI Bank servers seem to have crashed causing a myriad of problems, including no OTP arrival and unresponsive net banking.

UPDATE: It seems that the problems is across the ICICI services. Not only the transactions are failing because OTPs are not coming for debit or credit cards, even netbanking services and the iMobile app are not working. So severe seems the problem that even the ICICI website is down and can no longer be accessed. It says that, "An error occurred while processing your request."

Update 2: The ICICI website is now opening.

At midnight today, Amazon kicked off its annual Great Indian Festival sale with cashback and instant discount offers for shoppers who have credit and debit cards. These cards are from leading banks, such as the ICICI Bank. Amazon is offering 5 per cent cashback on its Amazon Pay ICICI Bank credit card to Prime members but otherwise, you get 3 per cent if do not have the Prime membership. To the dismay of all these cardholders, their credit cards would not work today. A deluge of complaints and rants against the ICICI Bank are now flooding the Internet.

But to be sure, we checked the Downdetector.com where the website tells about outages a website is facing and ICICI Bank's website saw a steep surge in problems within a few hours. The graph shows the issues on the ICICI Bank's serve began at about 9 am to 10 am but the failure rate increased rapidly by noon today. Not only the credit card but services like netbanking, OTPs, and customer care are also badly impacted by the outage.

"Not able to login to internet banking, not able to receive OTP seems like icici banking is completely down," said a frustrated user on the forum of Downdetector.com. "One of their Bank manager says it is because of Hyderabad floods. I do not know what the hell is wrong with their alternate server or not? And Do they have one at all?" said another user of ICICI Bank's services. A lot of people are not even sure what helpline they should dial to reach a customer executive who can help solve their banking problems.

Away from that forum, Twitter is full of complaints about ICICI Bank's server problems. "@amazonIN @ICICIBank_Care my ICIci Amazon pay card OTP just won't get delivered. Not the best Great Indian sale is it? Hope I don't lose out on my deals," said one of the hundreds of ICICI Bank customers who could not purchase their favourite product with discounts that Amazon is currently running under the sale.

The biggest issue that people are facing with ICICI Bank is with the OTP. Customers are complaining they are not receiving OTPs even after several attempts. Not even the IVR OTP option is working for them, due to which their payments are failing on Amazon. The fear of their favourite product going out of stock is real and it looks like ICICI Bank is to blame here.

Despite several complaints, ICICI Bank has not acknowledged the issue yet. It is yet to give a formal statement on why bank's highly-used services are not accessible, especially on a day when a huge part of India's online shoppers is busy getting their favourite deal.
