- OnePlus could be coming up with cheaper phones using the ODM route.
- ODM is a company that designs and manufactures phones for other firms.
- The OnePlus Z could be the first model utilising this business model.
The new OnePlus 8 series phones are out and they are priced slightly higher compared to the earlier OnePlus phones. In fact, there was a time when OnePlus phones used to come to market at a price of less than Rs 30,000. The price of the OnePlus 8 series phones starts from Rs 41,999. Now, there are rumours that OnePlus is also working on more affordable phones, which will be 4G-only instead of using chips supporting 5G like the OnePlus 8 series does, and will come with essential features.
A recent rumour has emerged from China, suggesting that OnePlus has plans to hold on to its roots with more affordable phones. As reported by Gizmochina, OnePlus is willing to go the ODM route of manufacturing affordable phones for most markets. ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer, which is essentially a company specialising in making phones based on blueprints from other companies.
Several big players in the industry try out this way of business. Phone makers such as Huawei, Oppo and even Samsung use the ODM way for making affordable phones. This results in much more affordable devices as brands don't have to invest in designs and manufacturing.
If OnePlus indeed ends up going this way, we can expect a variety of affordable phones coming from the company. This year, there's OnePlus Z expected from the company that may launch later in the year. The OnePlus Z has been rumoured to be a midrange device that could be much cheaper than the OnePlus 8 series devices.
The rumour, however, suggests that OnePlus could end up making a couple of 4G-only devices too with the ODM way. The OnePlus Z is expected to use the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chip, which is a top-tier 5G SoC.
Chances are that OnePlus may be planning more affordable devices on the lines of the original OnePlus X, relying on more affordable chips from Qualcomm such as the Snapdragon 765G or even the Snapdragon 720G. OnePlus could also end up using the lower-end Dimensity chips for such phones.
As of now, the cheapest OnePlus phone you can buy in India is the OnePlus 7T, which retails at Rs 34,999.
