- OnePlus has started rolling out the OnePlus Pay for its phones in China.
- OnePlus Pay currently allows payments via NFC as well as wallet based service.
- OnePlus will bring OnePlus Pay to India later this year.
Back in September 2019, OnePlus was unveiling the OnePlus 7T and the OnePlus TV in India. During the event, OnePlus was proud to announce OnePlus Pay -- a new payments app that OnePlus promised to offer a completely different digital payments service than what India has seen so far. OnePlus has been since then remained quiet on that front but recently, with news of the OnePlus 8 series launching in a few weeks, it seems that OnePlus Pay will finally see the light of the day.
According to a report from TechSina, OnePlus is now making the OnePlus Pay service live in China. The app has been reportedly working on a few OnePlus 7T units and it is said that users are able to make payments with support from a few banks in China. The screenshots of the app shared in the report suggests that OnePlus Pay will be similar in nature to Xiaomi's Mi Pay and will let users make payments from OnePlus phones more easily.
The app is currently able to make use of the NFC sensors on the phones to make one-tap payments at stores or during transit. Customers will also be able to make payments via POS machines. Another screenshot reveals that OnePlus will offer greater integration for OnePlus Pay through the OS. Chinese OnePlus phones run on Hydrogen OS and hence, the integration shown here pertains to the Chinese units.
In India, OnePlus will offer OnePlus Pay for Oxygen OS and you can expect OnePlus to rely on UPI payments to let users make transactions. The service could offer a digital wallet service similar to Paytm and PhonePe wherein customers get to store some money digitally in order to make quick payments.
You can expect OnePlus to release OnePlus Pay in India with the upcoming OnePlus 8 series launch. The OnePlus 8 series is expected to make the OnePlus phones more premium this year due to the more expensive Snapdragon 865 chip. The OnePlus Pay would let OnePlus offer digital services equivalent of Samsung Pay, although Samsung's service benefits from having the MST chip.
OnePlus has been lately focusing on improving software services in India. With the OnePlus 7T series, OnePlus announced its Cloud service which entitled OnePlus users to free cloud storage on OnePlus servers for one year to store photos and videos. OnePlus also initiated the Red Cable Programme to offer specialised benefits for all OnePlus users, even those who are using the first OnePlus One.
