  • Oppo's first foldable smartphone may soon go into mass-production.
  • According to a leak, Oppo could be working on two foldable phones.
  • Vivo is also working on its own foldable device, the rumour said.

Xiaomi launched its first foldable phone called Mi Mix Fold in China recently. And while there is nothing new in that, it is a good thing for customers who so far had limited options in the form of Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Motorola Moto Razr 5G. And it is going to get even better. Oppo may soon begin mass production of its foldable phones and chances are they will hit the shelves by the end of this year.

According to Digital Chat Station, a credible leaker, Oppo's manufacturing facility has got two "new folding screens for polishing" (translated to English from Chinese). This simply means the Chinese company is about to start mass-producing its foldables and conducting some preliminary tests on them. And by the looks of it, there may be two variants, one with an 8-inch screen and another with a 7-inch display. And both of them will be foldable from the inside, much like the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold. The 7-inch variant may already have a prototype, the tipster has said.

While there is no clarity on when the two foldable phones from Oppo will arrive, the report has noted the 7-inch variant was close to undergoing mass production back in January this year. And even though there may have been a delay in the process, Oppo is now moving ahead swiftly with its plan. Reason? Xiaomi. One of the leading tech ecosystem companies, Xiaomi, launched its first foldable phone called the Mi Mix Fold in China recently, and it has got Oppo worried. Oppo is probably fearing that it may end up being a laggard in the race for foldable devices.

Oppo's concerns are valid. The first foldable came out in 2018. It was called FlexPai and made by Royole, a Chinese company. But it was limited to China and adjoining markets. Then in 2019, Samsung launched what could be the most popular foldable smartphone called the Galaxy Fold. It has been around two years since then. We have a plethora of foldable devices now, one from Motorola, one from TCL, and one from Microsoft. Oppo was among the first companies to showcase the technology for foldables, but it has taken a long time to commercialise it. And that is why its foldable device is likely to arrive at a time when the foldable fad will be over.

Not just Oppo, sister company Vivo is also working on its first foldable that may have an 8-inch display. This will be a high-end device with a high refresh rate. And the tipster has said that when folded, the phone display will measure only 6.5-inches. Again, there are no details on when Vivo's foldable phone will be out in markets.
