Google Pixel 4a is soon going on sale in India. And it is going on sale at a price of Rs 29,999. Now, Google says this is a special festive season price and that the actual MRP of the Pixel 4a India is Rs 31,999. But here is an educated guess: Given that the price of Rs 29,999 is the launch price, we expect Google to stick with it even after the launch offer on the Pixel 4a has expired. If that indeed happens, we have to say that the Pixel 4a price in India is quite right.
No, it is not a very aggressive price. It is not a price that will make someone go wow, take out the wallet and purchase the Pixel 4a right there right now. Instead, unlike the Pixel 3a, which debuted at a higher price, this one is not going to sting the Pixel fans that much. While buying the Pixel phone, because they love the Pixel camera and clean Pixel software, they won't grimace at the price.
See it like this: At the same price people also have the option to buy phones like the OnePlus Nord. Or some of the phones from Realme and Xiaomi and Vivo and Asus and all these phones are quite competitively priced. They have faster chipsets than what is inside the Pixel 4a, they have better designs, they offer more features.
But Pixel is unique. And so is the Pixel 4a. It offers a few things that consumers can only get in a Pixel phone. So, it will find its takers, and these takers will find that the price of the Rs 29,999 for Pixel 4a is quite reasonable in India.
Pixel 4a specs
What do you get at this price? Here is a quick look at the Pixel 4a specs. The phone comes with a 5.8-inch screen. There are both good and bad bits about it. Good is that the smallish screen makes the phone compact and light. In the sea of 200 gram phones you will love the 143 grams Pixel 4a. You will also like the OLED panel which is surely going to be bright and vibrant. But the screen size you will find small compared to some phones that are Hulk-sized. The resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels ought to be plenty and is sort of standard in this price range.
Then there is the Snapdragon 730G processor, which should be good enough for most of the stuff you are going to on the phone. But it's definitely not the Snapdragon 865 or the Snapdragon 765 class. It sits a notch below those chipsets. You get 6GB RAM, which is good enough, and 128GB storage, which is great. There is a 3140 mAh battery, which is kind of okay, the body is made of plastic, which is not that appealing, and it also lacks water or dust proofing. There is one 120-megapixel camera at the rear and one 8-megapixel camera on the front.
Safe to say, the Pixel 4a is not big on specs. But Pixel phones have never been that big on specs. What Google sells with Pixel is the experience while using the phone and that should make the Pixel 4a worth the price.
The Pixel 4a experience
What is this Pixel experience. Primarily it is about two things: Camera and software.
When it comes to camera, the Pixel 4a has just one rear camera. The competing phones are putting all these two, or three, or four, cameras in their phones. But Google has shown in the past that it can do magic with one camera. We expect the same magic to happen in the Pixel 4a.
The Pixel 4a has the same image sensor that was there in the Pixel 4, a phone not even launched in India. This is a large sensor, and when used with whatever magical image processing algorithms Google puts in its phones, it should let users click some wonderful photos with the Pixel 4a.
On the front too, despite a 8-megapixel camera, the Pixel 4a should click some detailed selfies, particularly in low light.
Then the software. The Pixel phones offer clean Android experience. The Pixel 4a ships with Android but it should get the updates to the Android 11 soon. All the Google apps are there. The interface is straight, simple and clean. There is no bloatware in Pixel, unless you believe Google apps are bloatware.
The overall result of mixing clean software with good enough hardware means the Pixel 4a will be better than most, if not all, phones in its price bracket. And that we can say confidently because of its price of Rs 29,999. At a higher price, the Pixel 4a would have looked silly. But at this price, it seems like a fair deal. Okay, Google?
