Sony has finally released the specifications of its much-awaited next-gen console, PlayStation 5. The company released new details about the console at a virtual keynote for Game Developers Conference 2020, where Sony's lead system architect Mark Cerny spoke at length about all the new features coming to the console.

Sony even revealed in a blog post, that the new console will support 3D audio and nearly 100 PS4 games -- a number that the company promises will be added to as it continues testing more titles from the 4000+ game strong library of the PS4.

At the keynote for developers, the company also ran through the complete spec sheet of the upcoming console. However, it did stay away from revealing the design of the PlayStation 5.

Talking about the hardware, the console will get SSD storage for shorter load time and overall improved performance. Sony has also revealed that it is bumping up the GPU on the PS5 to help it handle higher screen resolutions and even support ray tracing -- for more realistic shadow and light effects in-game.

The new GPU will also help the PlayStation 5 support 4K gaming and even resolutions up to 8K in supported games. The PS5 will also focus on 3D audio feature to not just improve the sound quality within the game, but also make the game more true to life.

Explaining how the feature will benefit all users, and not just the ones with high-end speaker systems, Sony said:

"PS5 will also allow games to offer a much deeper sense of immersion through 3D audio. Visuals are of course imperative to the gaming experience, but we believe audio plays a crucial role as well. We wanted to deliver a compelling audio experience for all users, not just those who own high-end speaker systems. So we designed and built a custom engine for 3D audio that is equipped with the power and efficiency for ideal audio rendering. With 3D audio on PS5, the sounds you hear while playing will offer a greater sense of presence and locality. You'll be able to hear raindrops hitting different surfaces all around you, and you can hear and precisely locate where an enemy is lurking behind you."

Apart from this, the company has also revealed that the PlayStation 5 will come with an x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU that can run at speeds up to 3.5 GHz and will be paired to 16GB of DDR6 RAM.

The SSD onboard will have a storage of 825GB and is rated to provide 5.5GB/s Read Bandwidth. The company is using a custom GPU on the console, but Sony has revealed that it is from AMD and uses Radeon's RDNA 2-based graphics engine providing variable clock speeds up to 2.23 GHz and a total bandwidth of 10.3 Tera FLOPS.
