- Krafton is preparing to go public that will value it at KRW 30 trillion.
The maker of PUBG battle royale game, Krafton, is preparing to go public in South Korea as it plans to expand its game universe. And a major part of this expansion is going to be the release of a new game that will be heavily based on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in 2022. There will also be a survival horror game that Krafton may be working on already, and finally, an animated series that will be released on streaming services.
Krafton's Kim Chang-han, who developed PUBG IP at his startup called Bluehole before selling it to South Korea's Krafton where he also joined as an executive producer, told Bloomberg that Krafton is now readying itself for an IPO. And while Kim is confident about a successful debut of the company on the stock market launch -- which could value the startup at as much as KRW 30 trillion (roughly $27.2 billion), he is "determined" to expand the company's game portfolio. "We will not stay as a one-hit-wonder," Kim told Bloomberg.
There will be a new PUBG-like game for both PC and console, which will likely be developed by Kim. Now whether there will be a mobile counterpart for this game is not clear at the moment. A report recently suggested the company is developing the sequel to the mobile version of PUBG called the PUBG Mobile 2. Now, there is not enough known about this game right now except for the part that it will be based on the battle royale strategy.
PUBG Mobile, which is the mobile version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, is the top-grossing mobile game across the world. Although, last year in July, PUBG Mobile was banned in India over security reasons. Now, PUBG Corporation, which operates under Krafton, is hustling to relaunch the game with censored features in India.
Apart from this battle royale game, Kim is also said to be working on a survival horror game called "The Callisto Protocol". It could be released in 2022, according to the interview of Kim to Bloomberg. This game will be somewhat similar to PUBG as it will "depict the PUBG universe three centuries into the future" and developed by Striking Distance Studios, according to a media report. Krafton is also creating an animated show "that will be uploaded on streaming services" and a web cartoon, the Bloomberg report has said.
At the helm of all these new games will be the intellectual property of PUBG that the company will leverage to make "a bigger franchise." PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, or PUBG, was released in 2017 and shot to fame in no time across the world. It sold more than 70 million copies on PCs and consoles while the mobile version of the game was downloaded more than 600 million times, according to the company.
