- The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE price in India is Rs 49,999.
- The Galaxy S20 was launched in India at the price of Rs 66,999.
- Compared to the S20, the Galaxy S20 FE has different screen and build quality.
Samsung on Tuesday launched the Galaxy S20 FE, where the FE stands for the Fan Edition. This is a cut-down variant of the Galaxy S20 and Samsung hopes that it will be able to position the phone as a flagship killer at a more affordable price. But if the Galaxy S20 is the flagship and the Galaxy S20 FE edition is the killer, what is the difference between these two phones.
In the coming days you will hear about more subtle differences between the two phones but even if we take a quick look, some details are clear. To hit a lower price point, Samsung has toned down some bits in the Galaxy S20 FE, obviously though because everything costs some money. Having said that here are some key differences between the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 FE:
-- The biggest difference is in the build quality. Like a proper flagship phone, the S20 uses metal and glass body. Instead the Galaxy S20 FE uses a metal frame paired with a plastic body, reinforced with glass fiber. The material is termed "glastic" and it's definitely not as slick as proper glass. For all practical purposes, the back cover of the S20 FE is made of plastic. It also uses Gorilla Glass 3 layer on top of the screen and not the new Gorilla Glass 6 found in flagship phones, including in the S20.
-- The Galaxy S20 FE uses a lower resolution screen. Its screen resolution is 1080 x 2400 pixels, which is significantly lower compared to the higher resolution screen in the Galaxy S20. The Galaxy S20 uses a screen with resolution of 3200x1440 pixels.
-- The camera configuration in the Galaxy S20 FE is more regular compared to the cameras in the S20. While the main camera is the same one using a 12-megapixel sensor (IMX555) the camera with telephoto lens is different. The Galaxy S20 uses a 64MP image sensor for this camera while the Galaxy S20 FE utilises a 8MP camera.
-- The S20 FE is a heavier phone at 190 grams compared to the S20 that is quite light at 163 grams. Of course, the weight difference due to the size. The S20 FE is a bigger phone with a 6.5-inch screen, while the S20 has a 6.2-inch screen. The battery size is also bigger in the S20 FE as it gets a 4500 mAh battery instead of the 4000 mAh battery in the flagship phone.
-- The Galaxy S20 can record 8K videos, as well as videos in HDR+. The Galaxy S20 FE can only record videos in up to 4K and doesn't seem to support HDR+.
-- The front camera of the S20 FE uses a 32-megapixel image sensor. The front camera of the Galaxy S20 uses a 10-megapixel sensor.
To sum it, for all practical purposes the major differences between the S20 FE and the flagship S20 are in the build material, screen and some camera components. These are also the parts where the build cost tends to be high. So yes, the S20 FE costs less than the S20 but in some areas you also get a phone that is less than the regular S20. There is no harm in saving money if the cheaper phone serves your purpose, but do understand what you will be giving up and what you will be gaining if you decide to go for the S20 FE over the Galaxy S20.
