One of the biggest tech giants of the world, Samsung, put on a grand show as it launched as many as five new products at its Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event yesterday. At the online-only event, the phone maker took the lid off its new flagships, the Galaxy Note 20 series of smartphones, and launched alongside it the all-new Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Tab S7 and also the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Of these, it's definitely the latter that's most interesting.
The device is Samsung's second-generation foldable smartphone which has been launched with a number of upgrades over its predecessor. Here are five features that could make it a winner.
Galaxy Z Fold 2: Improved displays
Arguably the biggest improvement seen in the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is in the display department. On the outside we have a bigger display, that takes over the front of the phone. This screen has very little in terms of bezels and feels like a modern-all screen solution. The panel here is 6.23-inches in size capable of HD+ resolution. This panel sports a 25:9 aspect ratio. The panel also uses a punch-hole instead of a notch on the Galaxy Z Fold.
Samsung has also done away with the notch on the inner display, with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 now using a single hole punch centered in the top right half. This display also has very thin bezels around it. The display now has been increased from 7.2-inches to 7.6-inches. The main display can handle a resolution of 2,208 x 1,768 pixels. Interestingly, this display is protected using an Ultra-Thin Glass, as opposed to a polymer sheet found on the Galaxy Fold. This is a Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with support for HDR10+ and 120hz refresh rates.
Galaxy Fold 2: Familiar but refined design
The Galaxy Z Flip has been launched in two new colours, Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black. Unlike the Galaxy Fold which came with a glossy glass panel, the new Z Fold 2 uses soft-touch matte texture on the back glass.
Samsung has also made some other design changes. The fingerprint scanner has been moved from under the display to a housing for a capacitive fingerprint scanner placed on the side of the phone which also doubles up as the power button. Another interesting thing to note is that Samsung is letting users customize the hinge color on the Galaxy Z Fold 2.
Galaxy Z Fold 2: Improved cameras
Samsung has also improved the cameras on the phone. The phone now comes with a 12-megapixel wide camera with a 1.8m pixel size, sat next to an ultra-wide camera with a 12-megapixel sensor and a pixel size of 1.12m and an aperture of f/2.2. Samsung has also used a 12-megapixel lens for telephotos with a pixel size of 1.0m and an aperture of f/2.2.
For selfies, we have two lenses -- one placed on the inner display, while the other is placed on the outer display. They both are 10-megapixel sensors with a 1.22m pixel size and f/2.2 apertures.
Galaxy Fold 2: Faster performance and bigger battery
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also offers more in terms of performance when compared to its predecessors. The device is powered by Samsung's latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ chipset. This has been paired to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS storage.
As for the battery, Samsung is has equipped the phone with a 4500mAh battery that's again been divided into a dual battery setup. The phone also supports wireless charging, reverse wireless charging, and 25W wired charging.
