The 44th Reliance AGM will take place on Thursday. We expect to see a couple of big announcements from the telecom giant at the event. The most important of all being the timeline for the rollout of 5G services in the country. A few telecom players, including Jio, have got permission from DoT (Department of Telecommunications) to test 5G in India.
Recently, Jio opened its 5G field testing in Mumbai. Reports suggest that hardware being used for Mumbai trials is developed in-house. The trials will soon expand to other cities, making us believe that the announcement will likely happen tomorrow.
Moreover, Intel also opened up about its partnership with Jio to develop 5G networking technology. It will be interesting to see how this collaboration benefits the rollout of 5G services in India. For now, let's talk about Jio 5G in detail.
--Jio has been the pioneer of 4G services in India. And we wouldn't be surprised if the brand takes the lead even with the country's rollout of 5G services. In December, Reliance head revealed that 5G services would roll out mid-2021, which perfectly coincides with Reliance AGM 2021.
--In addition to that, Jio has also begun 5G trials in Mumbai. A report published by Qualcomm says that Jio 5G was able to achieve a speed of 1Gbps during the trials using indigenous technology. Now that's similar to what Airtel achieved in its 5G test conducted in the Cyber Hub area in Gurgaon.
--Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has allowed telecom operators to use 700MHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz spectrums for the 5G trials. Jio used a mix of mid (sub-6GHz) and mmWave trial spectrum for the field test in Mumbai.
--The telecom giant mentioned that it created a complete 5G solution in-house from scratch. Also, it is committed to relying on home-grown hardware and solutions for this purpose solely.
--From what we have learnt, Reliance will also be deploying sub-6Hz and mmWave networks in India. Both of which have their benefits, While the sub-6GHz network offers a longer range, the mmWave provides faster internet speeds at the cost of a shorter range.
--Reliance Jio is also tipped to test 5Gi in India, a technology that is developed co-jointly by IIT Madras and IIT Hyderabad. Besides this, the brand has been developing Virtualised Radio Access Network (RAN) in collaboration with Qualcomm to improve the pace of the 5G rollout in India.
--Jio rolled out the 4G service at really affordable pricing in the country, which is also one of the reasons for its widespread reach in India. Now that the announcement of Jio 5G is on the cards, we expect the telecom giant to follow the same suit. That said, it will not be as cheap as the 4G service, considering the hardware and infrastructure required for it.
--While Airtel has also been testing 5G services in India, It's Jio that has been tipped to roll out 5G services first in the country. Along with Jio 5G, the telecom operator is expected to launch the affordable Jio Phone 5G and JioBook during the event tomorrow.
