A little over two weeks after they were launched, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are on sale in India. There are two more phones that were launched at the Apple event on October 13 but these two, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 mini are going to be available in India only from November 13. So are you planning to buy a new iPhone , this festive season? If you are read on.

The reason behind this piece is because we believe if someone in India is hoping to get a new iPhone 12 series phone, one obvious question, despite the price difference, is: iPhone 12 or the iPhone 12 Pro. Both these phones are on sale today, which makes the question even more urgent.

The answer is simple: For most people, the iPhone 12 is the better option. You should go with it, and save a lot of money. As for why, let us explain.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro

As we noted a few days ago, there is very little that is different between these two phones. Last year, the iPhone 11 was clearly a more cut-down variant of the iPhone 11 Pro. It had a different design, a different screen, and different feature set. This time, Apple has done something else. The company has sort of turned the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro into twins, which are different from each other in some insignificant way.

A look at the comparison between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro will tell you this if you check out the Apple India website. But if you are not convinced, look at the iFixit iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 pro teardown.

The two phones are almost the same. They have the same design and hardware, including screen and battery. In other words, they both use the same OLED screen, measuring 6.1-inch. The displays in both the screens are so similar that iFixit says that it was able to swap the iPhone 12 Pro display in the iPhone 12 and vice versa. And they both have 10.78 Wh batteries that are also swappable. The processor inside them is also the same, which is the A14 Bionic and so is the software.

So, what is different between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro? The price is a big difference. The iPhone 12 costs Rs 40,000 less than the iPhone 12 Pro.

Are we saying that there is no point choosing the iPhone 12 Pro over the iPhone 12? Kind of. But let's dig in a little deeper. What else is different between the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12? A few things.

-- The iPhone 12 Pro starts with base storage of 128GB. The iPhone 12 starts with base storage of 64GB. If you want more storage in the iPhone 12, then you have to pay Rs 84,900, so the price difference between the Pro and non-pro iPhone goes down to Rs 35,000. That is still substantial saving.

-- The iPhone 12 Pro has an extra camera, a zoom camera with 52mm lens. The other two cameras in the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are the same.

-- The iPhone 12 Pro has a steel frame, and is available in more subtle finish. The iPhone 12 has an aluminium frame and is available in more vibrant colours.

-- The iPhone 12 Pro has 6GB RAM. The iPhone 12 has 4GB RAM.

-- Probably due to more RAM, the iPhone 12 Pro can record 10-bit Dolby Vision HDR videos in 60FPS, a first for a phone. The iPhone 12 can also record the same video, but at 30FPS.

-- The iPhone 12 Pro has a LiDAR, which helps it capture better low light photos. Plus it, along with the iPhone 12 Pro zoom camera, also helps that phone capture portrait photos with night mode. This night time portrait photos feature is limited to the iPhone 12 Pro.

These are the only major differences between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro. And yes, the iPhone 12 is slightly lighter. So is it worth picking the iPhone 12 Pro?

As we noted earlier, the answer is no. Most customers will be more than satisfied with the iPhone 12. Things like RAM don't matter in an iPhone as much as they do in Android phones. The zoom camera does matter, but you can also crop photos and get fairly good results because the iPhone 12 camera is quite good. The Pro will be better in shooting in low light, but the night mode is also available on the iPhone 12 and that is more than good enough for most users.

The only reason to the pick the iPhone 12 Pro over the iPhone 12 are two:

1- You shoot videos and photos from your phone for living. In this case, the extra edge that Pro offers in camera photography could be worth it.

2- And two, you are in love with the steel frame or the unique finish that the iPhone 12 Pro offers.

As far as features, quality of hardware, performance etc are concerned the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are extremely close.

iPhone 12 vs iPhone 12 Pro saving money

The choice, the way we see it, is clear. Save money and get the iPhone 12 if you are thinking about an iPhone 12 series phone.

As for saving more money, there are some launch offers on the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro in India today. Here is what Apple is giving:
