Highlights

  • Twitter's new Advanced feature now available in India.
  • It lets users find Covid-related resources on the platform.
  • It can help users filter for fields like a specific hashtag, time period, or tweets from a particular account.

Twitter as a platform has seen a tremendous surge of users posting updates about help, supplies, SOS, and more such situations in the past few weeks. Now, in the current times, if you are looking for data around hospital beds, oxygen cylinders, or medicines, then you have to keep your search on Twitter limited to these keywords. Remember, the key to finding the correct info on Twitter is related to your specific query, so keep it around the most important search keywords.

The second wave of Covid has been brutal, to say the least, and what that means is it could be a long battle for our country and one that will require everyone to come together to do their bit. In these times, social media platforms are playing a major role, and in particular, Twitter, where people are posting requests, updates, and helpful resources that can help find the latest information and access resources faster. Twitter's new advanced search feature is now available in India when you're logged in to the platform on the desktop. It allows users to tailor search results to specific date ranges, people and more. This makes it easier to find specific tweets.

Before discussing how it works for users, let's first explain how you can refine your search on a platform like Twitter. Let's say if you'd like to see tweets that are close to your current location, type in a relevant hashtag in the search bar, tap the toggle button on the top right, and turn on 'Near you' under 'Location'. You'll have to turn on location settings for this to work.

There's also an option to make sure the most recent tweets are at the top of the timeline by tapping the 'sparkle' button on the top right of your home timeline. This option gives you a filter to only see recent info shared on the platform and not one that may no longer be of any use. In February, the government confirmed that there are about 1.5 crores of Twitter users in India.

How Twitter's advanced search feature works

-- Log in to twitter.com and click advanced search under Search filters on the upper right tab or more options and then click advanced search. You can also alternatively go to twitter.com/search-advanced.

--Under advanced search, users can filter for words, including exact phrases, hashtags, language.

--The advanced search option also gives the option to look for relevant accounts like a tweet from this/ these accounts, to these accounts, mentioning these accounts.

--There are more filters available for replies, like include replies and original tweets.

--If you want to make sure that the search you're performing also shows tweets that have a specific engagement level, then you can add a filter for minimum replies, minimum likes, minimum retweets.

--Lastly, the most important filter dates. If you want only tweets showing from the last 24 hours, you have to fill in this filter and add specific dates.

--After filling in the appropriate fields, you can tap on search.

Above is a screenshot of the search we got when searching for oxygen cylinders in the last few days. The advanced search option helps you streamline your search on the platform, so use it to find help or in order to help others in need.
