- Twitter has already started rolling out the feature for its users.
A week after Twitter announced that it will add more information to the hashtags trending on its platform, the micro-blogging site announced that it will add headlines and descriptions to the topics that are trending. Twitter wants its users to understand better why a particular topic is trending and why it is being tweeted about.
Announcing the new feature, Twitter wrote from its official handle, "More trend updates, even more context. We'll now add improved headlines and short descriptions to some Trends, so you can get the rundown on why something's trending when you're in the Explore tab or you tap into a Trend."
This would make the trends section even more informative and users would not have to scroll through the entire page to find out why something is trending on Twitter.
For instance, now when you see the trends section, you only see the hashtags that are trending. So if MS Dhoni is trending, Twitter would only show his name but now the latest update will provide more information. The hashtag will also include a headline or description that would tell users that MS Dhoni is trending because he took retirement from international cricket. Sometimes even bizarre topics that you have never heard of before start trending on Twitter because of its involvement in something controversial or outrageous. In those cases too, Twitter will add a little description or attach a news headline informing users about why it is trending.
"In the coming weeks, you should see brief descriptions added to some trends as well to help add context to the trend. Descriptions will provide straightforward, clearly sourced context around why something is trending. Descriptions are developed by our curation team and follow their guidelines. Descriptions on trends will be found on twitter.com and Twitter for iOS and Android," Twitter had said in a blog post.
More than a social media platform, Twitter is a major source of information for users across the globe. So it is important for the company to ensure that only the right information travels through its platform. Although Twitter has taken many measures to curb the fake news menace, this new feature should help in rightfully educating the users.
In July this year, Twitter removed several accounts that were misusing trends to peddle conspiracy theories on the platform. As per reports, the micro-blogging site blocked as much as 1,50,000 accounts from the platform for doing so.
