- Xiaomi to ditch LCDs on flagship Redmi phones.
- Smartphone maker to stick with AMOLED panels.
- Redmi Note 10 series had used AMOLED screens.
Xiaomi may completely ditch the LCDs on Redmi flagships and stick to AMOLED panels. The company had made the big switch with the launch of this year's Redmi Note 10 series where all the three smartphones were equipped with AMOLED screens. Seems like its will stick to this strategy and will not launch a Redmi flagship with LCD. The development comes Redmi's general manager and Xiaomi VP Liu Weibing conducted a poll on Weibo where he asked users to select between LCD and LED displays.
More users voted for LED panels. Interestingly, Xiaomi had conducted a similar poll ahead of Redmi Note 10 series' India launch, where most people had voted in favour of AMOLED displays. The smartphone maker had surprised all by launching phones with high refresh rate AMOLED screens.
Another user inquired where a Redmi phone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 will get an LCD screen. To which, Weibing responded with a No. This further confirms that at least the high-end Redmi smartphones will continue to use AMOLED panels.
It will be interesting to see how much of this decision affects the Indian market as the Note series remains to be Xiaomi's most premium offering in the country under the Redmi series. It tried to change that with the launch of Redmi K20 line-up in 2019 but hasn't introduced a successor since. Instead, Xiaomi has been rebranding Redmi K series smartphones under different names, the Mi 11X series being the latest to get that treatment.
The company is planning to launch the Redmi Note 10S in India next week. The phone will be unveiled on May 13 and is confirmed to have an AMOLED panel as well. It is also expected to introduce MIUI 12.5 in the country, among other features. This makes the entire Redmi Note line-up one of the most affordable smartphone series in India with AMOLED screens.
Realme 8 and Realme 8 Pro were also equipped with AMOLED screens and come around the same price point. Samsung is known to use AMOLED panels on its phones as well but often makes compromise with lower refresh rate. A
