After compiling a list of more than 100 CEO candidates, Microsoft settled on Satya Nadella, a home-grown leader who joined the software maker in the early 1990s. Here's a little more about him -

BORN: Hyderabad, India.
FAMILY: Married for 22 years to partner he's known since high school. Three children.
HOBBIES: Reads books, takes online courses. "I buy more books than I can finish." Reads poetry. "It's like code," he says. Grew up playing cricket and enjoys watching Test cricket, which can go on for days.
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Mangalore University; master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
CAREER: Member of technology staff at Sun Microsystems. Joined Microsoft in 1992 to help build Windows NT while finishing MBA on weekends. In 2001, became responsible for Microsoft Business Solutions' research and development, promoted to leader of MBS in 2006. In 2008, named senior vice president of search, portals and advertising. In 2011, named president of Microsoft's server and tools business.
