The Budget announcements are in line with the 'Make in India' and 'Start up India' initiative of the Government.

Notably, extension of the sunset clause for the SEZ units to March 31, 2020 is a welcome move. This will help IT / ITES companies plan their expansion in SEZs and remain competitive by virtue of the tax holiday. However, similar extension should have been granted to SEZ developers commencing operations before this date rather than March 31, 2017, as currently proposed.

HIGHLIGHTS:Union Budget 2016

A concessional Patent Box taxation regime of 10 per cent will encourage companies to locate the high-value jobs associated with the development, manufacture and exploitation of patents in India.

Similarly, 100 per cent deduction of profits for three out of five years for start-ups setup during April, 2016 to March, 2019 will certainly give impetus to start ups and facilitate their growth.
