Economic Survey 2017: Here's all you need to know

The Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley tabled the economic survey in the Parliament today. The Government's Budget website defines the survey as "A flagship annual document of the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, which reviews the development of the Indian economy over the previous 12 months, summarises the performance on major development programmes, and highlights the policy initiatives of the government and the prospects of the economy in the short to medium term."

The Economic Survey is prepared by the Chief Economic Advisor to the government. It gives suggestions to the government over key economic policies. However, it is upto the government to consider the recommendations or not.

Here is what all you need to know

1. The Economic Survey includes the details of the performances of various sectors of the country. It is more like an annual report card of the economy.

2. It helps in tracking down the estimated growth rate of the nation.

3. It gives an economic insight in the key factors both micro and macro. It tells about the different sectors' performance and also strategies for the struggling ones.

4. It lists out the reasons behind the failure of the government's  key policies and schemes.
 
5. The Economic Survey also prepares the detailed roadmap on how to take the economy forward.
