S Somanath revealed in an interview with NDTV said, "PM Modi can fly to Space when Gaganyaan Is operational'.
Somanath emphasized that sending the head of state to space would be a significant achievement, showcasing India’s capability in human spaceflight. He stated, “All of us will be very, very proud if we have the ability to confidently send the head of state to space.”
The Gaganyaan human spaceflight program aims to contribute to astronaut training for missions like the International Space Station (ISS), while testing environmental life support and control systems during a one-day orbital flight.
ISRO is currently focused on critical missions this year, including an unmanned orbital mission, equipment and algorithm tests, and launch pad scenario checks. The first test flight of Gaganyaan is scheduled for late next year, pending progress updates.
Earlier this year, ISRO introduced four astronaut designates from the Indian Air Force, highlighting their preparation for space missions and their role in advancing India’s space capabilities.
The human spaceflight program aims to develop and strengthen India’s capacity in space exploration, marking a strategic milestone in the nation’s space endeavors.
Dr. Somnath noted that the success and timeline of Gaganyaan depend on ongoing progress and readiness across all mission phases and technological developments.
The potential inclusion of Prime Minister Modi in India’s inaugural human space mission underscores the country’s aspirations and advancements in space technology and exploration.
