Benchmark indices started March 2024 in style with BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty scaling lifetime high levels, led by gains in banks, financials, automobile, metals, consumer and energy stocks. Headline index NSE Nifty eventually closed at 22,338.75-level after hitting an all-time high of 22,353.30 in intraday trade. The 30-share BSE pack touched a record peak of 73,819.21 before settling 1.72 per cent higher at 73,745.35. Top gainers on the Nifty50 platform were Tata Steel, L&T, JSW Steel, Titan and IndusInd Bank while losers included Dr Reddy's, Infosys, HCLTech, Sun Pharma and Britannia.
Stocks such as HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and L&T were most active on NSE today, in terms of value. SBI and PowerGrid were the other buzzing stocks on the platform, in terms of volume.
In the NSE 500 index, shares of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) emerged as the top gainer. The stock zoomed 9.74% on NSE today to settle at Rs 133. At this price, the company commanded a market capitalisation (m-cap) of Rs 54,936 crore.
Suven Pharmaceuticals Ltd shares soared 9.01% to close at Rs 686.1 on proposed merger with Cohance Lifesciences. The company's m-cap came at Rs 17,465.7 crore.
Jamna Auto Industries Ltd shares surged 8.59% to close at Rs 130.2. The company's m-cap stood at Rs 5,193.2 crore. Oil India, Data Patterns, Metropolis Healthcare and Tube Investments were some of the other gainers on NSE 500.
Shares of Max Healthcare Institute Ltd fell sharply today. The stock dived 7.13% to close at Rs 736.75 on Friday. At this price, the company's market cap stood at Rs 71,601.7 crore.
Aptus Value Housing Finance India Ltd shares slipped 5.11% to end the session at Rs 334.15. The company's m-cap came at Rs 16,671.6 crore today. Global Health, TV18 Broadcast, Network18 Media & Investments and PB Fintech were among some other laggards on NSE 500.
