Gone in 60 seconds: A snapshot of the digital world we live in

The Internet rules our lives across all spheres. From surfing the net for information, news reports and shopping to sharing status updates on social media, everything seems to be just a click away.    

Every one minute, the virtual world around us changes drastically. The reach of Internet is so vast, and profound, that an annual, monthly or a daily analysis is a path less travelled, we look at trends by the minute.

In 2017, Facebook said it had more than two billion active monthly users - or at any given month, more than a quarter of the Earth's population logs onto the platform at least once. Better still, for every 60 seconds, Facebook clocks 90,000 logins, 100,000 friend requests, 243,000 picture uploads, 13,888 app installations, 3.3 million shares, 50,000 posts and registers 15.2 million likes and shares on other websites.

Whatsapp, Facebook's largest acquisition, processes around 29 million messages in a minute, globally. It has 1.5 billion monthly active users (MAUs) and 300 million daily active users.

The micro-blogging platform, with many famous personalities on board, has clocked 350,000 tweets every minute. Saudi Arabia has the highest percentage of internet users active on Twitter.

The youngest and most vigorous member of the social media universe (by its audience's age), has 210,000 snaps uploaded every 60 seconds. More than 400 million Snapchat stories were created per day in 2017.

In 2017, an estimated 1.66 billion people worldwide purchased goods online. Online shopping accounted for $751,522 every minute. Global e-etailing sales touched $2.3 trillion in 2016-17.

Last calendar recorded global 3.7 billion email users. Around 156 million emails were sent through different domains every minute. In 2016, Google claimed to have over 1 billion monthly active users.
