The political landscape in Bangladesh has shifted dramatically since Sheikh Hasina's ouster on August 5, leading to concerns over the safety of minorities, including Hindus. In response, India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka for a high-level dialogue, addressing the targeting of minority communities and emphasizing the importance of protecting them. Misri highlighted the strong, people-centric ties between India and Bangladesh, urging Dhaka to ensure peace and safeguard minority rights. Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashimuddin, however, defended the nation’s record on religious freedom while cautioning India against commenting on internal matters. Meanwhile, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee dismissed provocative remarks from Bangladeshi leaders about Indian territories with a firm rebuttal. As India hopes for a cooperative relationship with its neighbor, the question remains whether Bangladesh will take decisive action to curb radical Islamist violence or risk further instability.
