Andhra Pradesh’s urban local body elections, scheduled for October 30, have sparked political tensions amid allegations of nomination obstruction and violence. The YSRCP has accused the ruling TDP of preventing opposition candidates from filing nominations, while vehicles were allegedly set on fire near the homes of two YSRCP candidates in Pulivendula. The TDP has rejected the allegations. After the Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed the YSRCP’s plea as premature, the Supreme Court directed the State Election Commission to examine complaints by October 22 and defer publication of the final candidates’ list until October 25, stressing the need for free and fair elections.
