Italy is preparing to introduce new measures targeting burqas and niqabs in schools, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni making the issue a key part of her political agenda ahead of next year’s general election. Meloni has argued that no one should be able to force a young woman to cover her face in the name of tradition. Her government is also proposing changes around the number of foreign students in classrooms and compulsory Italian-language lessons for parents of foreign students facing difficulties integrating into the school system. The proposed measures still need to go through Italy’s legislative process before they can become law.
