Chennai Fisherfolk Protest ₹1,200-Crore Secretariat Plan, Vijay Govt Says No Final Decision

A major fisherfolk protest has erupted in Chennai’s Pattinapakkam over a proposed ₹1,200-crore Secretariat complex under the Vijay-led Tamil Nadu government. Hundreds of fishermen and coastal residents have taken to the streets, opposing the proposed project and raising concerns over their homes, livelihoods and access to the sea. Opposition leaders, including BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan and DMK MP Kanimozhi, have questioned the plan, while CPI(M) has also urged wider consultation. The Tamil Nadu government says no final decision has been taken and that a Detailed Project Report will be prepared before the Chief Minister decides whether the Secretariat will actually be built there.
