India’s 7.8% GDP growth has come under scrutiny after a seasoned former bureaucrat questioned whether the official data truly reflects the economy. Deven Choksey, MD, DR Choksey FinServ Private, strongly defended the GDP numbers, pointing to automobile sales, real estate activity, consumption, corporate earnings, GST collections and direct tax collections as key indicators of economic growth. He argued that ground-level data from entrepreneurs and businesses also supports the official growth picture. Choksey said simply calling the GDP number incorrect is not enough and that anyone challenging the data must provide evidence. He described the criticism as politically loaded and potentially damaging to investor confidence.
