Maharashtra’s Marathwada region is facing a deepening agrarian crisis, with standing crops withering amid intense heat and a monsoon deficit. As many as 265 talukas across the state have been declared drought-hit, while more than 650 farmer suicides have been reported in Marathwada this year. Farmers are demanding immediate relief, with several claiming they are still waiting for compensation announced after last year’s floods. In Nanded, farmers say the worsening situation has forced them to sell their cattle at very low prices. With irrigation under pressure, the Maharashtra government has also announced a 10% cut in urban water supply, adding to concerns over the road ahead for farmers.
