In an exclusive interview with India Today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addresses concerns over Washington’s closer ties with Pakistan and whether they could affect India’s fight against terrorism. Speaking to Raj Chengappa, Rubio says the US relationship with Pakistan does not come at the expense of its relationship with India, emphasising that both countries share concerns about terrorism. Rubio also discusses the US role in preventing escalation during the India-Pakistan tensions surrounding Operation Sindoor in May 2025. While declining to reveal details of his diplomatic conversations with both sides, he says Washington is prepared to play a constructive role in preventing conflict. Rubio adds that the US would prefer India and Pakistan to pursue opportunities in business, commerce and cooperation rather than move towards war.
