U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States remains open to diplomacy with Iran but will continue protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking after talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Manila, Rubio said Iran's economy and military capabilities have been significantly weakened by inflation, infrastructure damage and years of military spending. He added that the U.S. will keep targeting launch sites used in attacks on commercial vessels while urging other nations to support freedom of navigation. Rubio also noted that China opposes restrictions on shipping through the strategic waterway and hopes Beijing continues that position.
