Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called on public sector banks to consider launching a focused month-long ‘Banking For Youth’ campaign from October 2, 2026, targeting young citizens above the age of 16. Speaking at the PSB Confluence 2026 in New Delhi, Sitharaman said early engagement with young people can help bring them into the formal banking system and build financial capability from the beginning of their financial journey. The proposed campaign could be coordinated through the Department of Financial Services and the Indian Banks’ Association, with colleges, universities and skill-building institutions serving as key outreach points. She also suggested dedicated ‘Yuva kiosks’ and ‘Yuva Banking Mitra’ facilities at bank branches to help young customers navigate their financial needs. The proposal comes as India’s young population increasingly shapes consumption, savings, investment, entrepreneurship and wealth creation.
