U.P. Makes ‘Use By Date’ Mandatory For Loose Sweets From October 15

Uttar Pradesh has made it mandatory for sweet shops and retailers to display the ‘Use by Date’ on loose sweets from October 15. The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department said the move is aimed at helping consumers check the freshness and shelf life of sweets, which can vary from one day to 30 days depending on the type, ingredients and weather conditions. The department has also banned the use of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol in milk and milk product processing units after inspections found their use as coolants during pasteurisation and refrigeration. Propylene glycol can be used as an alternative.
