Zuckerberg Apologises After High-Level Meeting With Modi Govt

Meta is facing one of its toughest regulatory challenges in India as the Narendra Modi government intensifies scrutiny over child safety, content moderation, deepfakes and platform accountability. Following a high-level meeting with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, attended by Meta's global public policy chief Joel Kaplan, CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologised for lapses involving Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), deepfake content and operational errors on the platform. The government has made it clear that global technology companies must comply with Indian laws, while regulatory pressure has increased after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights ordered a probe into Instagram advertisements allegedly linked to CSAM. Adding to Meta's troubles, a Parliamentary panel has issued the company a three-day ultimatum over the removal of a video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and warned that its Safe Harbour protection could be reviewed. With India accounting for hundreds of millions of users across WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and generating billions in advertising revenue, this confrontation could have major implications for Meta's business and the future of Big Tech regulation in India.
