Share Market News Today Highlights: Sensex, Nifty extend gains for 2nd session; JSW Steel, Coal India, Hindalco among top gainers

On the index front, Nifty is expected to find support at 17,100 in case of any dip and gradually inch toward the 17,580 zone, said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd. Market participants should not go overboard and maintain focus on sector/stock selection, he added.

The overall market breadth stood strong as 2,365 shares advanced while 1,095 declined on BSE. The market capitalization (m-cap) of BSE-listed companies rose to Rs 275.87 lakh crore.

11 out of the 15 sector gauges -- compiled by the National Stock Exchange -- settled in the green. Sub-indexes Nifty Metal and Nifty IT outperformed the NSE platform by rising as much as 3.25 per cent and 1.57 per cent, respectively. On the flipside, Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG fell 0.34 per cent 0.43 per cent today.

Mid- and small-cap shares finished on a higher note as Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.26 per cent and small-cap surged 1.24 per cent.

On the stock-specific front, JSW Steel was the top Nifty gainer as the stock soared 4.94 per cent to close at Rs 675. Coal India, Hindalco, Tata Steel and L&T were also among the gainers. In contrast, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC, IndusInd Bank and Divis's Lab were among the top losers.

Shares of Suzlon Energy fell 3.66 per cent to trade at Rs 7.63 in afternoon trade.

Shares of SpiceJet Ltd surged more than 5 per cent on Thursday as the budget carrier is likely to receive an additional loan of Rs 1,000 crore under the government's modified Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme. (Read more)

The overall market breadth stood positive as 2,414 shares were seen advancing while 761 were declining on BSE.

Mid- and small-cap shares were strong as Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.27 per cent and small-cap climbed 1.34 per cent.

"Nifty formed a long bullish candle following a rather larger Engulfing candle indicating of an upside breakout of the larger consolidation movement around 16,800-17,200 levels," said Tirthankar Das, Technical & Derivative Analyst, Retail, Ashika Stock Broking Ltd. Until and unless the index provides a decisive close above 17,350, it would be a sell-on-rise market, he added.

Hindalco, Coal India, JSW Steel, Tata Motors and HCL Tech were among the top gainers on the NSE platform today with their shares up as much as 2.70 per cent. In contrast, Bajaj Finance, Cipla, Divi's Lab, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC were among the top laggards.

Sensex and Nifty staged a stellar recovery on Tuesday to end over 2 per cent higher amid positive cues in the global equity markets. (Read more)
