Stock Market News Today Highlights: Sensex and Nifty traded higher today on the back of strong performance updates by companies ahead of quarterly earnings. However, rising crude oil prices dented investor sentiment and kept the gains in check.
Share Market News Today Updates, 6 October 2022: Sensex and Nifty extended their gains for the second straight session today.Indian equity benchmarks traded higher today on Thursday, extending their gains for the second session, amid strong performance updates by companies ahead of quarterly earnings. However, rising crude oil prices dented investor sentiment and kept the gains in check.
Asian shares traded cautiously higher today Japan's Nikkei index climbed 0.70 per cent and South Korea's KOSPI surged 1.02 per cent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 0.42 per cent.
Oil prices edged up after OPEC+ agreed to slash oil production by about 2 million barrel per day, further tightening global crude supply.
Overnight, Wall Street settled on a lower note. The S&P 500 fell 0.20 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite ended 0.25 per cent down.
Back home, the benchmark BSE Sensex rose 157 points or 0.27 per cent to settle at 58,222, while the broader NSE Nifty had moved 58 points or 0.33 per cent higher to close at 17,332 today.

Nifty outlook
On the index front, Nifty is expected to find support at 17,100 in case of any dip and gradually inch toward the 17,580 zone, said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd. Market participants should not go overboard and maintain focus on sector/stock selection, he added.
Share market breadth
The overall market breadth stood strong as 2,365 shares advanced while 1,095 declined on BSE. The market capitalization (m-cap) of BSE-listed companies rose to Rs 275.87 lakh crore.
Sectoral indices
11 out of the 15 sector gauges -- compiled by the National Stock Exchange -- settled in the green. Sub-indexes Nifty Metal and Nifty IT outperformed the NSE platform by rising as much as 3.25 per cent and 1.57 per cent, respectively. On the flipside, Nifty Pharma and Nifty FMCG fell 0.34 per cent 0.43 per cent today.
Mid & small-cap stocks
Mid- and small-cap shares finished on a higher note as Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.26 per cent and small-cap surged 1.24 per cent.
Top gainers & losers on NSE
On the stock-specific front, JSW Steel was the top Nifty gainer as the stock soared 4.94 per cent to close at Rs 675. Coal India, Hindalco, Tata Steel and L&T were also among the gainers. In contrast, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever, HDFC, IndusInd Bank and Divis's Lab were among the top losers.

Expert View
"Nifty formed a long bullish candle following a rather larger Engulfing candle indicating of an upside breakout of the larger consolidation movement around 16,800-17,200 levels," said Tirthankar Das, Technical & Derivative Analyst, Retail, Ashika Stock Broking Ltd. Until and unless the index provides a decisive close above 17,350, it would be a sell-on-rise market, he added.
Top gainers and losers on NSE
Hindalco, Coal India, JSW Steel, Tata Motors and HCL Tech were among the top gainers on the NSE platform today with their shares up as much as 2.70 per cent. In contrast, Bajaj Finance, Cipla, Divi's Lab, Hindustan Unilever and HDFC were among the top laggards.
