Stock Market News Today Highlights: Sensex and Nifty traded higher today, led by strong buying interest in metal and energy stocks amid mixed cues from global markets.

"Weak signals from the global markets and elevated oil prices are challenging the domestic market to maintain its gains. The US IT giants' disappointing quarterly earnings served as the catalyst for selling in the US market," Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
Oil prices climbed after surging more than 3 per cent in the previous session, driven by record US crude exports. India is the world's third-largest importer and consumer of oil, and a rise in crude prices has a direct impact on inflation.
Foreign institutional investors sold a net Rs 247 crore worth of equities on Tuesday, while domestic investors bought net Rs 873 crore worth of shares, as per provisional data available with the National Stock Exchange.
Here are the share market highlights:
Derivatives expiry
Markets ended with modest gains on the expiry day of October month derivatives contracts amid mixed cues, said Ajit Mishra, VP - Research, Religare Broking Ltd. "The consolidation in Nifty is on the expected lines and we recommend focusing more on the sector/stock selection for now. Apart from banking, sectors like auto and selectively pharma, realty and metal are likely to do well in near future. Participants should align their positions accordingly," he added.
Nifty: Technical view
The Nifty index has sustained above the crucial moving average on the daily timeframe confirming the uptrend, said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities. On the higher end, the index may move towards 17,950 and on the lower end, support is visible at 17,650/17,550," he added.
View on Nifty Bank
The Bank Nifty index witnessed a range-bound trading session on the last of the October series, said Kunal Shah, Senior Technical & Derivative Analyst at LKP Securities. The index's immediate hurdle is seen at 41,500 where aggressive call writing has been witnessed and once breaches above that will see further short covering towards the 42,000 level, he added. Shah further stated that Nifty Bank remains in a buy-on-dip mode as long as it holds the support of 40,500 where fresh put writing has been witnessed in the November series.
Share market breadth
The overall market breadth stood weak as 1,836 shares advanced while 1,583 declined on BSE. The market capitalization (m-cap) of BSE-listed companies rose to Rs 277.13 lakh crore.
Nifty Metal, Nifty Oil & Gas outperform
14 out of the 15 sector gauges -- compiled by the National Stock Exchange -- settled in the green. Sub-indexes Nifty Metal and Nifty Oil & Gas outperformed the NSE platform by rising as much as 2.71 per cent and 1.36 per cent, respectively. On the flipside, Nifty IT fell 0.52 per cent today.
Mid and small-cap stocks
Mid- and small-cap shares finished on a higher note as Nifty Midcap 100 climbed 0.61 per cent and small-cap shed 0.41 per cent.
Top gainers & losers on NSE
On the stock-specific front, JSW Steel was the top Nifty gainer as the stock soared 5.74 per cent to close at Rs 681.35. Hindalco, Tata Steel, PowerGrid and Adani Ports were also among the gainers. In contrast, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints, Tech Mahindra and Bajaj Auto were among the top laggards.

Sensex rises 213 points or 0.36 per cent to close at 59,757, Nifty moves 81 points or 0.46 per cent higher to settle at 17,737
Nifty IT slips
Sub-index Nifty IT fell 0.71 per cent to trade at 28,519.90
Karur Vysya Bank up 8%
Shares of Karur Vysya Bank jumped 8.33 per cent to trade at Rs 100.10. The Jhujhunwala portfolio bank stock touched its 52-week high of Rs 100.80 during the day.
