What appeared like a shoo-in and a one-horse race till just a few weeks back, as to when will Apple cross $1 trillion in market valuation, has suddenly widened into a four pronged contest, with three other tech companies now equally strong contenders for the 13 figure mark.To be sure, the Tim Cook-led Apple is still furlongs ahead, with a current market cap of $876.64 billion - though it's way off its all time high of $925.4 billion.

Amazon, which seems to be having the bull run of its life, not just for itself but also for its founder, Jeff Bezos, recently became the second most valued company, with a market capitalisation of $759.89 billion.Amazon also became the world's most valued brand, worth $150.81 billion, while Bezos became the only member of the 12-figure billionaire club, worth $129 billion.

Google's parent company, Alphabet, which has slipped to third place in the market cap rankings, is currently worth $725.75 billion - one of the four companies in the $700 billion plus market cap club.To be sure, the trillion dollar valuation has been kissed briefly once before - by PetroChina, which on its listing in 2007, was valued at slightly over $1 trillion but soon went downhill from there, losing $800 billion, to be currently valued at $215.63 billion.

The race got further heated with a projection from Morgan Stanley about Microsoft crossing the one trillion dollar rubicon within the next 12 months. The Bill Gates founded company is currently valued at $724 billion.

Admittedly, Berkshire Hathaway, the company led by Warren Buffett, is a long shot away from a trillion dollars in market cap, given that it's still a bit shy from half that amount - current market cap standing at $491.94 billion.Considering that less than a year back, Amazon too was less than half a trillion dollars worth in market value, Berkshire Hathaway could be well placed to give the others a run for their trillion dollars.
