In a growing preference towards occupant safety, several car makers are making airbags a standard fitment in most of their cars, including several of their price-sensitive, entry-level models.
The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has made driver airbag an option in all variants of Alto 800 and Alto K10, after the recently launched Baleno hatchback and S-Cross had dual airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) standard across all options. The company has also made these dual airbags and ABS available as an option in all variants of its other cars like Ciaz, Eritga, DZire, WagonR and Celerio.
RS Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing & Sales at Maruti Suzuki said, "With driver airbag being offered from the base variant upward as an option for the Alto, a number of car customers in India will feel reassured as we enhance safety much ahead of the regulations."
Another Japanese car maker Honda Cars India also announced dual airbags as standard for all grades in its City hatchback in addition to ABS. The company has also introduced Rear ISOFIX & Top Tether Anchor for Child Seats as standard equipment in the City.
Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice President for Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd said, "We hope the mix of premium features in the form of safety enrichment to the City line-up will enhance the customer's motoring experience."
Luxury car makers like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and Volvo always had airbags and ABS as safety equipment in their models sold in the domestic market.
